Glick ’93 named as hero on doomed plane

Media reports have identified Jeremy Glick '93 of Hewitt, New Jersey, as one of the passengers who is believed to have thwarted plans for a fourth hijacked airliner to crash a Washington, D.C., target on Tuesday, September 11. Authorities believe the actions may have caused the plane to crash in Pennsylvania farm country rather than hitting a possible terrorist target.

(Also reported on the hijacked airliner that crashed in Pennsylvania was Jean Hoadley Peterson '69N, who was traveling with her husband, Donald. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, October 28.)

At Rochester, Glick was an English major who was active with the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, including serving as president of the chapter. An active competitor in Judo since 1976, Glick was National Collegiate Judo Champion in 1993.

Longtime dean of students Paul Burgett, now vice president and University general secretary, remembers Glick:

"Jeremy Glick was a big man—in size and in heart. I knew him to be kind and committed not only to the University community of which he was a part, but through his work with children at the YMCA, to the larger Rochester community as well.

"He was very effective as president of his fraternity, Alpha Delta Phi and worked hard on issues that helped strengthen not only his fraternity but also the Greek system generally.

Jeremy was a bright young man, with good common sense, a great sense of humor, and a deft touch for working well with everybody. He was highly regarded by those who knew him.

"I have one especially vivid—and funny—memory of Jeremy. After one visit to my office, we exchanged a bear-like hug and both of us laughingly commented on how rare it is for one big guy to be hugged by another big guy. The moment was special for me and, I think, for him."
