Services for Full-Time Students

The University Health Service (UHS) provides a full range of primary care services, including the treatment of illnesses and injuries, management of on-going medical problems, and advice for any health concern. Prevention of illness is a major focus of the care provided at UHS. During your visit to UHS, your health care provider will help you learn to manage your health care needs.

All full-time students pay the mandatory health fee, which covers office visits at the University Health Service and the University Counseling Center. In addition, full-time students must have health insurance. Students can enroll in the Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance plan offered by UHS, or they can remain on their own (or their parent's or spouse's) insurance.

Coverage is from September 1 through August 31, as long as the student remains a full-time student. For 2007-08, the mandatory health fee is $576 and the health insurance fee is $1,080. Part-time students are not eligible to participate in the Student Health Program; however, they are welcome to come to the University Health Service on a fee-for-service basis.

The UHS Information Sheet provides a summary of the services offered for full-time students.

Primary Care

The mandatory health fee covers primary care visits with physicians, nurse practitioners, and registered nurses at the University Health Service.

Access to Care 24 Hours a Day

Whenever UHS is closed, a UHS physician is available by phone for urgent concerns. A mental health professional is on-call and available by phone 24 hours a day throughout the year.

Allergy Injections & Immunizations

Students can arrange to receive their allergy injections at any UHS office. Immunizations for travel and other vaccines (i.e., flu shot, Hepatitis B vaccine) are also given at UHS. There is a charge for the serum or vaccine but not the visit.

Counseling

The mandatory health fee covers time-limited individual and couples therapy and yearlong group therapy at the University Counseling Center.

Health Education

The UHS Health Promotion Office provides programs and information to help students make informed decisions about their personal health. Check Health Promotion on this web site or call 273-5775 for information. Check Health Topics for information about a wide variety of topics.

Health Information

UHS has a health information phone number for patients who would like to speak with a registered nurse about a health concern. Weekdays throughout the year, patients can call 275-1160 for health information. Patients can also ask a question through the Contact Us on this web site. See Health Topics on this web site for information on numerous health topics. Brochures are also available in all UHS offices.

Laboratory Tests & X-Rays*

Some laboratory tests are performed during a visit to UHS. The majority of laboratory tests are sent to Strong Memorial Hospital (SMH) for processing. Patients needing x-rays are referred to the SMH Radiology Department.

Medications

Several non-prescription and prescription medications prescribed by UHS providers are available for purchase at UHS offices, often at a lower cost than at a local pharmacy. Students can take advantage of the prescription drug discount card plan offered by Monroe County at no cost. The prescription discount plan is under “On-Line Forms.” The discount card cannot be used for purchasing medications at UHS. The prescription card offered previously through Chickering/Aetna is no longer available.

Patient Advocate

The UHS Patient Advocate represents the interests and concerns of patients. She works on the behalf of patients to review and resolve questions or grievances with the services or care they receive at UHS.

Physical Therapy*

UHS offers physical therapy services at the Eastman School of Music and on the River Campus.

Referrals to Specialists*

Students needing to see a specialist for a consultation will be referred to a specialist in the area by their UHS health care provider.

Transportation to Appointments

Students can use the "UR Sponsored Taxi Service" to travel to medical appointments off campus. Up to five (5) tickets can be used per person/per ride; each ticket is good for 2 miles. Tickets must be purchased prior to traveling. This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

*The mandatory health fee covers the cost of visits with a UHS health care provider. It does not cover the cost of laboratory tests, x-rays, medications, physical therapy, and visits with specialists. Health insurance may cover some of these fees.
