Academics

There are more than 175 degree programs offered in the University's undergraduate and graduate divisions. More than 95 percent of classes are taught by faculty, not teaching assistants, and it's not uncommon for senior faculty—often some of the most distinguished people in their field—to teach introductory courses.

Symbols and Traditions

The official University colors are "dandelion yellow" and "Rochester blue." They were formally adopted by the Board of Trustees in 1954. The cast flagpole on the Eastman Quadrangle bears the University motto, "Meliora." The dandelion is the official flower of the University; the official mascot is the Yellowjacket. One of the University's oldest traditions, the Boar's Head Dinner is modeled on a celebration held at Queen's College in Oxford.

River Campus

Located on the banks of the Genesee River, the River Campus has captured the imagination of students for nearly 75 years. Rush Rhees, president of the University when the River Campus was designed and dedicated, once said that the campus must be "architecturally worthy and academically suitable."

Rush Rhees Library

Headquartered in Rush Rhees Library, the University's libraries hold more than 3 million volumes and provide access to an extensive collection of electronic, multimedia, and interlibrary loan resources. The tower of Rush Rhees Library is the institution's unofficial symbol and a community landmark. The tower houses the Hopeman Memorial Carillon, one of only six carillons in New York State. The Welles-Brown Room in Rush Rhees Library was restored to its original 1930s grandeur, while providing the latest in high-tech research capabilities, including wireless Internet access.
