Undergraduate Studies

The Rochester Curriculum

The Rochester Curriculum is designed to ensure that students acquire a broad base of knowledge, as well as extensive familiarity with at least one area of specialization. Because it has no required subjects other than a primary writing course, the Rochester Curriculum provides students with unmatched freedom to pursue their individual interests.

  • Bachelor degree requirements:
  • Eight semesters of approved coursework (128 credits)
  • A primary writing requirement
  • A major in a specialized field within one of three broad areas:
humanities and arts; social sciences; natural sciences and engineering
  • A major, minor or cluster (a set of 3 related courses) in each
of the other two areas *

* Students in accredited engineering majors are required to complete work in only one additional area.

Undergraduates develop their academic plans in close consultation with faculty advisors and advisors in the Center for Academic Support.
