McNair programs, funded by the Department of Education, are found at many top universities, including Colorado State. Their purpose is to encourage bright undergraduates, through intellectual and practical program enhancement, to attend graduate school. They serve populations that have traditionally been underrepresented in the ranks of graduate students.
Nation-wide, McNair programs have proved very successful in preparing their participants for the challenges of advanced education and research. McNair students have sophisticated understandings, insights, and expectations, unlike many entering graduate students who may take years to develop them. McNair Scholars constitute an excellent recruitment pool.
The Awards are for $7,500 and must be paired with a half-time (20 hours per week) graduate assistantship from the department, which pays tuition dependent upon the type of assistantship awarded. Students must be US citizens or permanent residents and registered for (RI) campus instruction and be enrolled full-time. The McNair Graduate Fellowship awards are non-renewable. A 3.0 GPA will be sufficient for these awards. The deadline for nominations is March 4, 2005. Awardees will be selected and departments notified by March 15.
