Explore & Celebrate at the Interfaith Chapel
The University of Rochester's Interfaith Chapel IS a place where students can explore and celebrate what they believe. Founded in 1971 as an interfaith building, we are committed as a community to support of and respect for different faiths and religions. In this sense the Chapel is a working model of diversity on campus.
The University chaplains all have offices housed in this building. As a group they understand that college is a time when students may want to explore and challenge their faith traditions. Such exploration is welcome and the chaplains stand ready to help students work through new ideas and beliefs and confront different value systems. This open world view is a trademark of the work of chaplains who work in this interfaith dwelling. We can and do understand such questioning and change and we welcome students of all different faith traditions. All this happens here without any pressure or sense of obligation. Our welcome to you is hospitality based rather than obligatory. So, understand that we welcome your questioning and exploration. In fact, we encourage it!
The Interfaith Chapel is where people come to celebrate their faiths and beliefs. The Chapel is busy with study groups, prayer sessions and services for a variety of communities. A schedule is available through your RA or from the Chapel Office by calling x5-432 I. You are welcome at these services as well.
While the Chapel is a place where people seek quiet and time to worship and reflect, it is also a place where people are active and DO! The chapel communities and staff arc active in social justice and public service activities including work on Alternative Spring Break, the Bridge Dinners and work at Women's Place among others. In addition, each year all the communities participate in several "Faiths In Action" events. As a multi-faith community, we come together on these occasions to do service in the community on National Gandhi Day, Martin Luther King Day and in March for PB & Jam.
We're concerned that Rochester students have thought about their roles in the larger world and human community and we encourage and foster this understanding through our programs. Courses on rural poverty are run here, as are movies, lectures, all night study sessions and support groups for those who are grieving a loss, who have an eating disorder or alcohol problem.
So, come join us at the Chapel. EXPLORE your beliefs and values with us, CELEBRATE your commitments and religious faith here and ENJOY the rewards and challenges of being involved in a diverse community which is committed to respect for differences and concern for public service.
