Weekly News:
In the Fall semester of 2002, the members of the Varsity Student Athlete Advisory Committee were involved in a number of community projects. Central to VSAAC’s mission, community service has emerged as a growing aspect of the committee’s activities. VSAAC organized a very successful shoe drive in the Fall of 2002. Thanks to the generosity of the many patrons of the Goergen Athletic Center who brought shoes to VSAAC’s boxes in the locker rooms, many pairs of much needed shoes were donated to the Salvation Army in December. The committee looks forward to another fruitful shoe drive in the near future.
Currently, the members of VSAAC are actively involved in the planning of two major charity events. Saturday, April 12th from 8 am- 4 pm VSAAC is hosting a 3 vs. 3 Basketball Tournament in the Goergen Athletic center. Players may sign up at the front desk of the Athletic Center. The fee is $5 per person. Each team may carry up to 5 people. T-shirts and various prizes will be awarded to the winners of the tournament. All proceeds benefit the athletics program at Marshall High School in Rochester, New York. Recognizing the importance of athletics in a scholastic environment, VSAAC has chosen to donate the proceeds of the basketball tournament and the upcoming walk/run to Marshall High School in an attempt to help alleviate the budget constraints Rochester public schools are currently facing.
Additionally, in the spring of 2004, VSAAC will be hosting a walk/run to benefit Marshall High School athletics. VSAAC is currently seeking donations in the form of both monetary sponsorship and prize donations. Please contact VSAAC through the webpage if you are interested in becoming involved. Several levels of sponsorship are available. VSAAC hopes to establish this walk/run as an annual community-wide event, linking both the University of Rochester community with the greater community of the City of Rochester. |
