Masters Swimming is an organized program for adults (19 and older) interested in swimming. Practices follow the academic calendar from September to May. Members may participate in a variety of ways including fitness swimming, local competition, and national and international competition. As a member of a Masters Program you may choose your level of involvement
First you will be joining a group of people, like yourself, who enjoy getting into shape and staying in shape by swimming. This means that you will be working out in a fun and supportive environment. You will also have a coach available to develop workouts and offer suggestions to improve the mechanics of your strokes and your efficiency in the water.
All club members must join the River Campus Sports Complex R Club. For Faculty/Staff and Alumni the cost is $212.00 for a one year membership. For those individuals that are not associated with the University the fee to join the R Club will be $415.00 for a one year membership. This membership will allow you to join the Masters team as well as having access to the Sports Complex throughout the year. The facilities that R Club members are allowed to use include the indoor track, swimming pool, basketball courts, racquetball courts, squash courts and tennis courts.
Membership to U.S. Masters Swimming is optional. If you choose to compete you will need to join the Niagara District Masters Swimming. Registration dues are $35.00. Benefits include a yearly subscription (12 issues) to SWIM Magazine, the quarterly Water Power Gazette (newsletter of Niagara Masters) participation in all USMA sanctioned events which include fitness events, pool competitions, and open water swims, and relays on the national level.
Practices are held in the UR Aquatic Center three times per week: Monday and Wednesday from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM and Saturday from 8:00AM - 9:30AM. The season extends from September to May. Practices will include technique work, interval training, race pacing, and starting techniques. Additional topics may be covered, which include nutrition, goal setting, mental training, and race preparation.
