Bert A. VanHorn '30

At Rochester:

• An excellent running back and great defender when single-platoon football was the order of the day
• His most spirited rival was the opposing captain of Hobart College, Merle Gulick
• Their final meeting was on the playing field (in 1929) resulted in a 13-0 Rochester victory, although Gulick gave a dazzling performance with more than 250 yards rushing
• Graduated from the University with a baccalaureate degree in 1930

Post-Graduate:

• Immediately after the 1929 game, the ball was awarded to VanHorn as the captain of the winning team. In 1965, Gulick was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame. VanHorn wrote a letter of deep praise to his long-time rival and included the game ball from their final meeting. Gulick thanked him and promised that the ball would hold a place of honor in his trophy case just as the Hall of Fame award would
