CHICAGO - Rochester lost, 3-0, to both third-ranked Washington University and unranked New York University on the first day of the University Athletic Association women's volleyball championships. The event is being conducted at the Unviersity of Chicago.
The Bears posted a 25-15 win in the first set, a 25-13 win in the second set, and nipped out a 25-23 victory in the third set. Washington improved to 26-3 overall, 8-0 in the UAA. In Rochester's second match of the afternoon, NYU posted a 25-23 win in set one, a 25-17 win in the middle set, and another 25-23 victory in set three. Rochester is 17-19 overall heading into a Saturday afternoon match vs. Case Western Reserve (12 pm Central starting time).
Against Washington, Kelly Mulrey led Rochester with 10 kills. Alma Guevara had six kills and Sarah Kauper had four. Guevara had 13 digs and two blocks. Lauren Bujnicki had 10 digs. Emily Hunter had eight, and Katie Drinkwater contributed seven. Rachel Bender had 22 assists.
Mulrey had a match-high 16 kills against NYU and added five digs. Guevara had five kills, five digs, and six blocks. Bujnicki led Rochester with 11 digs. Katie Drinkwater had 10, and Bender had seven - to go along with 27 assists.
