University Counseling Center (UCC)

Raymond Babineau, M.D.

Ray Babineau received his B.A. from Bowdoin College (1959) and his M.D. from Harvard Medical School (1963.) After completing his internship and psychiatry residency training at the University of Rochester (1967), he served for three years as psychiatrist at the Army hospital in West Berlin, Germany.

He returned to Rochester in 1970, and for the next thirteen years was on the full-time faculty of the Department of Psychiatry . During ten of those years, he was chief of what is now the University Counseling Center . He then switched to part-time faculty status, with one-day a week spent teaching and supervising at UCC as well as a half-day a week teaching in the Department of Psychiatry, where he is a Professor of Psychiatry. The remainder of the week is spent in the private practice of (mostly) psychotherapy.

Ray won the Rubin Teaching Award in the Department of Psychiatry in 1984, 1987 and 2005. He received the Thaler Award for Teaching in Psychotherapy in 1999. He was awarded a Roeske National Teaching Award from the American Psychiatric Association in 1996. (When asked to explain the origins of his teaching style, he credits the many dedicated teachers he has had, as well as Monty Python and his Flying Circus.)
