Responsibilities of Server Administrators

In addition to routine maintenance of the server, establishing new lists, testing software, etc., as defined in job descriptions, server administrators—except when the responsibilities are handled by the divisional webmaster—are expected to:

  • Schedule and execute backup protocols.
  • With the approval of the appropriate webmaster (or dean's office, as responsibility is delegated by that particular division), link new pages.
  • Search out pages that have not been updated in a timely manner and contact the site's publisher.
  • With the concurrence of the individuals exercising divisional oversight for Web content, "unlink" pages with prohibited information and contact the site's publisher, who must then correct the pages before they will be re-linked, and contact other University officials as appropriate. Aside from the above procedure, pages will not be edited without the publisher's permission.
  • Maintain and regularly update a list of page publishers.
  • Inform page publishers of broken links.
  • Notify page publishers of updates to software.
  • Participate in the Web Advisory Committee.
  • Keep up-to-date on security issues and act to protect the server.
  • When adding servers, conform to naming policy as outlined in this manual.
