Policies, Guidelines, and Support for Web Authors

The University of Rochester has a large Web network consisting of more than 140 servers distributed across the University campuses and hosting in excess of 1.4 million pages of information.

Nearly all the University's departments and divisions now have a presence on this Web network. A Web site has become an indispensable resource for a department's own faculty, staff, and students, as well as for interested researchers, prospective students, and potential employees. Thus, the Web plays an integral role in the University's mission and in its future.

This Web Manual offers basic information for any department or office needing to develop or maintain a Web site. The manual answers questions on topics such as getting a Web account, designing a University Web site, or linking a site to the University Web.

Policy issues are addressed by a University Web Group, which is advised by a Web Advisory Committee. The day-to-day business of the University Web is carried on by over 600 information providers and webmasters with the support of their unit IT service and backed up by ITS University Web Services.

For more information on the University Web or to clarify anything in this manual, direct questions to your local support person or to the University Webmaster at webhelp@rochester.edu.
