Buenos Aires: Fall, Spring, or Full Year

Poised between the sweeping Rio de La Plata and the legendary Pampa, Buenos Aires presents enticing contrasts, from the wide elegant avenues and sprawling parks of the riverside to the crowded narrow streets of the barrios beyond the city center. Students who have little or no prior study of Spanish pursue an intensive beginning or intermediate Spanish language program, which incorporates area studies courses in international business, the arts and social sciences. Students with advanced Spanish skills take area studies courses taught in Spanish, and have the option of enrolling at the Universidad de Buenos Aires or taking part in the Spanish Honors program through the Universidad Torcuata di Tella. In addition, students may explore the unique barrios of Buenos Aires through internships, volunteer work and intercambios with university students. Offered through the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES).

Oaxaca: Summer

This is a faculty-led, summer language program which takes place in the charming colonial city of Oaxaca. Rich in traditions and surrounded by indigenous villages, Oaxaca has long been a destination for lovers of fine crafts and for those interested in Mexican history and archaeology. The Instituto Cultural Oaxaca, beautifully installed in an old family mansion, is the site of classes and lectures for UR students. Students travel from Mexico City to Oaxaca accompanied by the program director. In Oaxaca they are met by local hosts who provide room, board and informal lessons in the language and culture. The daily language classes at the Institute offer both group and individual work in grammar and conversation. Afternoons offer crafts workshops, folk dancing and exploration of the area markets and nearby pre-Columbian sites. For more information contact the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, 275-4251.
