In Absentia
The opportunity to study in absentia is open to those students expecting Arts and Science degrees who have been accepted into an accredited graduate or professional school after completing three years of undergraduate study at the University of Rochester. A student must apply for in absentia study to the Administrative Committee, and once approval is received, declare in absentia status by completing a Change of Status form and submitting the $60 per semester fee to the Center for Academic Support. In general, all applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A. Completion of writing and Rochester Curriculum requirements.
- B. Acceptance into a department or major field, and the written recommendation for in absentia study by the undergraduate adviser of that department or field. The recommendation should include a statement that major requirements have been completed, or specify how they will be. It is perhaps most efficient to submit this recommendation at the time the student requests in absentia status.
- C.A satisfactory academic record. This includes an absence of incomplete grades and evidence of better than average progress toward a degree.
The Bachelor's degree is awarded after successful completion of the first year in graduate or professional school, as indicated on an official transcript which the student sends to the Center for Academic Support. Normally, then, while students on in absentia status may attend Commencement, they do not graduate until their requirements are complete.
